Have Some Fun.

Walk a little. Take to the trail and spend 3 or 4 hours, maybe a day or two, even a whole week. Its all available in the Flinders Ranges Council area. Take an easy drive if you have a couple of hours to spend. Enjoy some of the sights experienced by our early explorers. Walk around the towns and learn of the good times and bad experienced by our forefathers. Set up your camp in the bush setting of Warren Gorge. See the machinery used long ago to tame and farm this ancient land. Maybe you have some old relatives buried in one of our many cemeteries. Perhaps your father or grandfather was one of the thousands of troops who went through Quorn on the magnificent steam trains during the War years. Was he a lucky recipient of one of the near 1,000,000 free meals served up by the local CWA ladies to weary troops during those years of sorrow?

The Coffee Pot (Steam coach) was used in a daily passenger service running on the line between Quorn and Hawker. It has been restored by the Pichi Richi Railway workshops at Quorn and now runs on special occasions or by special hire on the line from Quorn to Woolshed Flat. A number of people of late are hiring the Coffee Pot for the bridal party to travel from Quorn to the Old Willows Brewery Restaurant at Pichi Richi for a wedding reception after a marriage service in one of the historic old Quorn Churches.

These steam trains are run by the volunteer members of the Pichi Richi Railway Society. Many of the operators come from 350 or more kilometres away to run these trains. The steam trains are operating from the end of March until the end of October each year and run on all School and Public Holidays. Extra trains are run every second weekend through this period, most of these are the old Barwell Bull passenger car diesel engine driven which regularly operated on the Adelaide line between Terrowie and Quorn from the late 30's onward.

Warren Gorge Bush Camp Ground.

The ultimate bush camp ground experience not to be bettered anywhere. Running water, tadpoles, jagged rocks, shady trees, water cress, hill climbing, kangaroos, wild flowers and wide open spaces. This is where the kids can run free. Spend a few nights under a star spangled sky, go for a walk by the light of the silvery moon, smell the scent of pines and gum trees in flower. Watch the waving spinifex as it comes out in head, go for an invigorating walk in the hills or just laze around and enjoy the serene peace of the bush broken only by birds calling from the tree tops. At sunrise and dusk you may even see some of the yellow footed rock wallabies.

Some bush long drop toilets have been provided by the Flinders Ranges Council and rubbish bins are located at strategic places. There is plenty of room here as the camp sites are spread over many areas and you can select your own site. Many of the Quorn locals along with those from Port Augusta will be found here on a Sunday afternoon picnic.

Beautiful Warren Gorge was the setting for the Australian film Bitter Springs made in 1949-1950. In 1997  Warren Gorge was chosen to be part of the week long activities during the Opera in the Outback events. It hosted the Lee Kernaghan Country and Music Concert. The open air stage near the tree lined creek at the bottom of a slope was set up so that the audience were seated above with  tree lined creeks on either side and the huge rock face of Warren Gorge in the background. This background was lit up by powerful lights and some 4,000 audience members enjoyed an evening to remember forever.

ROCK CLIMBING

Rock Climbing opportunities abound in this area as there are many near vertical faces in areas such as Devil's Peak, Warren Gorge, Mount Benjamin, Buckaringa Gorge, South Creek Gorge, Dutchman's Stern and the Ranges around Hawker. A number of schools are already making this activity a part of their stay when at the Quorn Outdoor Education Centre or Old School Camp.
