Guided Tours & Walks at
Hawker.
Town Heritage Walk
The Hawker Community Development Board has designed a walk and brochure,
aimed at enlightening visitors on the built heritage, and early pioneering history of
Hawker. Enquire at The Flinders Ranges Visitor Information Centre for a copy on your way
to Hawker, or stop in at Hawker Motors to collect one.
History in Hawker
The old timber jinker with wooden wheels shown here was used by the Mayo
family to cart Red Gum sleepers for the railway line when it was being built. One hundred
sleepers at a time were carried on this jinker and it was pulled along by 12 to 16
bullocks. Other items of old farming machinery are horse drawn mower, wagon and a horse
drawn hay rake in left centre. These items can be viewed near the Outback Chapmanton Motor
Inn.
Old Hawker Council Office
This building served as the Hawker council office for many years. In
January 1997 the Hawker council area was combined with the Kanyaka Quorn Council area and
now they are jointly known as the Flinders Ranges Council. The Quorn office is now the
managing office. Some council meetings are
still being held there each year.
Yourambulla Caves
This cave, which contains Aboriginal paintings are only 10km's south of
Hawker on the road to Quorn. The walk from the car park will take you only 15 minutes. The
view of the paintings as well as the Willochra plains is spectacular and well worth the
walk. Follow the main track on the left up to the first Cave. There is now a walking trail
going further north east in a ring trail and this will take you to two more sites if you
have the time.
The paintings were made by the Adnyamathanha people, those who lived in
the Flinders Ranges. The name Yourambulla is derived from the Adnyamathanha phrase
"yura pilla", meaning two men, and is related to the two peaks (to the east of
the painting sites).
