Other Landmarks. Many are the landmarks in this area. Just some are Mount Brown, Devils Peak, The Dutchman's Stern, Horseshoe Range, Mount Ragless, Mount Arden, Arden Vale Bluff, The Benjamin, Wyacca Bluff, Black Jack mountain, Wonoka Bluff and Arkaba Range. Devils Peak
Driving through the Pichi Richi Pass from Port Augusta to Quorn this view of the Devils Peak presents itself. This is near Woolshed Flat where the Pichi Richi Trains turn round on their 2.5 hour return trips. Another great view of a landmark can be seen as you drive along the Arden Vale Road towards Quorn. This is the Dutchman's Stern so named by an early explorer Captain Mathew Flinders as he sailed up Spencers Gulf. He believed that in shape from where he was on the Gulf, it resembled the Stern of a Dutch Galleon sailing ship. This area is now the Dutchman's Stern Conservation Park. The 50 Year old Fleece of WoolIt was in a remote area of this property in 1928 while riding a horse to check on his stock that Mr. Mal Groves found one of his sheep which had escaped being shorn. He dismounted his horse and shore the sheep with a pair of hand shears he always carried with him. He put the fleece in a small cave thinking he would come back to collect it one day soon. He forgot about it until in the late 1960's (nearly 40 years later) when he found it again. The wool was almost as good as the day he put it there so he took it home and with the help of the Australian Wool Board had it processed and made into a coat for his wife. There is a photo of Mrs. Groves in this coat in the Courthouse in Quorn. Mount Arden StationMount Arden Station was taken up around the same time as Kanyaka Station. Mount Arden, Mount Ragless and Kanyaka Stations between them accounted for most of the land between Quorn and Hawker at that time. The Mount Arden woolshed near the centre of above photo is National Heritage listed and of the three is the only remaining one that is still standing. Mount ArdenMount Arden just west of Warren Gorge is the high point of the Flinders range in this area and it has three radio towers on it. This is a Mountain without any trees and is covered with Spinifex the native grass which grows in low rainfall areas. Also you will find scattered Grass trees known locally as Yacka. These plants can live for hundreds of years and in good seasons send forth a long cane with a large seed head on top. Wyacca BluffSeen from many places throughout the district. This range is west of Buckaringa Valley and is seen clearly while driving across the Willochra Plain on the road to Hawker. Highly inaccessible country and on private property. Many were the stories of old hands from the Wyacca and Buckaringa areas in the early days about Euro shoots carried out along this range. (A Euro is a short dark grey haired muscled type of kangaroo which lives in rather inaccessible rocky areas.) One that comes to mind is of the farmer who had a greyhound dog which was used to catch kangaroos. While out on one of these shoots the dog chased after a Euro. The Euro just stopped held out its arms and as the dog flew in wrapped its arms around the dog and instantly crushed it to death, then threw it over the rocks for good measure. Mount BenjaminWhen travelling out from Quorn to Warren Gorge, Mount Benjamin will be passed on the right hand side. The area known as Comstock is at the back of this mountain. Some rock climbing is done here at times. There are many wattle trees on the side of Mount Benjamin and when in flower the whole western side can be a blaze of yellow. Black Jack MountainThis can be seen when travelling across the Willochra Plain as it is directly in front of you. Black Jack is in the hills approximately four to five kilometres past Kanyaka ruins. It is at the foot of this landmark that the old town of Kanyaka was surveyed and a hotel and store built. All that remains today is a pile of stone and rubble. [ FRC Area ] [Escaped Secrets] [
