Fantastic Water Holes.

The Flinders Ranges Council area has a low rainfall, varying from approximately 350mm or 14 inches  per year in the mountains to as little as 175mm or 7 inches on the plains. Consequently water is at a premium. However it is surprising but very welcome that a number of creeks in dry areas have permanent water in them. Most of these water-holes are in water reserves which fortunately  shows how important the early settlers thought they were. These water holes are used by local farmers to water their stock so if you visit please keep the area free of rubbish and do not frighten the stock.

Mount Arden and Willochra Creeks join here.

The Willochra Creek starts its journey at Melrose over 100km from here. In many places as it travels across the Willochra plain it floods out and really there is no definite creek. Once it gets near the hills it again becomes defined and eventually flows through a large gap in the ranges out to Lake Torrens. This creek has many waterholes along the last 50km of its length.

Buckaringa Creek enters the Willochra here.

Another permanent hole on the Willochra Creek just below the point where the Buckaringa Creek flows into it. Just the other side of the small hill from where this photo was taken is where the Wirreanda/Kanyaka Creek cuts through the range to flow into the Willochra Creek. The Wirreanda/Kanyaka Creek drains all the country to the East.

Waterhole near Simmonston.

Kanyak01.jpg (21256 bytes)

Situated on the water reserve at Simmonston this hole was very deep in years gone by. Unfortunately of recent years it has been filled up to some extent possibly due to the lack of floodwaters which help clean out a hole like this on a sharp bend. Also cattle are using it for water and they tend to break the banks down and fill the hole with silt.

Kanyaka Death Rock water-hole is another well known place to visit. Willow Waters 20km east of Hawker is also a favourite picnic spot. Places like Warren Gorge and Buckaringa Gorge all have some small permanent holes also.
