Movies Made in and around Quorn.


Bitter Springs - 1949/1950

Made near Quorn in Yarrah Vale and Warren Gorge. This movie is in black and white and depicts the struggle between the pioneer settlers and aboriginals as they clash over a waterhole in the early days.

Cast: Chips Rafferty, Jean Blue, Nonnie Piper, Tommy Trinder, Gordon Jackson, Michael Pate, Charles Tingwell .

One hundred and twenty aboriginals were brought in from Ooldea on the Transcontinental railway line to act in this movie. They were camped in Warren Gorge on what is now a very popular camping site for travellers. Many local farmers and their horses were hired for this film.


Kangaroo - 1952

Filmed in the foothills of the Flinders Ranges between Port Augusta and Quorn and also in Quorn and Buckaringa Gorge this was the first Technicolour film made in the area. Eighty aboriginals were brought in from the Ooldea Mission to help make this film.

Cast: Maureen O'Hara, Peter Lawford, Richard Boone, Finlay Currie, Chips Rafferty, Bud Tingwell.


Robbery Under Arms - 1957

The major part was made north of Wilpena Pound with some scenes taken on the Willochra Plain near the old township of Willochra. This film depicts the adventures of a cattle rustling bushranger Captain Starlight.

Cast: Peter Finch, David McCullum, Ronald Lewis, Johnny Cadell, Maureen Swanson, Jill Ireland

This movie was remade again using the area north of Wilpena Pound in 1984 and was released in a longer version as a TV mini series.


The Sundowners - 1960

Released in 1961

Many of the scenes were made in Quorn, this tells the story of a wandering outback itinerant sheep shearer and his family as he searches for work.

Cast: Robert Mitchum, Deborah Kerr, Peter Ustinov, Chips Rafferty.


Sunday Too Far Away - 1973\1974

Released in 1975

Set in the 1950's this film is about a team of sheep shearers who have a great bond of friendship but still remain most competitive. Shows the friendships, clashes and bonds which are typical of a shearing team.

Cast: Jack Thompson, Max Cullen, Robert Bruning, John Ewart, Ken Shorter, Reg Lye.


Gallipoli - 1980

Steam train scenes were made in Quorn and the Pichi Richi Pass. Tells the story of typical Aussie mateship between two lads who meet during a race. They then join the Army in the Light Horse regiment and go to the Gallipoli campaign in 1915.

Cast: Mark Lee, Bill hunter, Mel Gibson, Bill Kerr


The Last Frontier - 1985

A number of scenes for this film were made in Quorn. Tells of an American lady who comes to Australia to find that she has inherited a property in the outback. This is a story of the struggle that this  woman must go through to prove her worth in this land.

The Shiralee - 1986

Some of this film was made in and around Quorn. Set during the 1940's this tells of the trials and tribulations of a father and his young daughter as they travel through the outback from place to place looking for work.

Cast: Bryan Brown, Rebecca Smart, Noni Hazlehurst.


The Light Horseman - 1996

Filmed between the old settlement of Barndioota and Five Ways west of Hawker this is the story of four Australian troopers in the legendary Lighthorse regiment. Tells of their mateship before the epic last charge against the Turks in Palestine in 1917.

Cast: John Blake, Peter Phelps, Tony Bonner, John Walton, Gary sweet, Sigrid Thorton, Anthony Andrews.
