History in the Steam Trains of the Flinders.

Pichi Richi Railway.

Historic Steam trains run from the Quorn railway station on all public holidays and throughout the school holidays. Some days you will also find the old Coffee Pot steam rail car running. On other days the old diesel Barwell Bull used for the passenger service from Peterborough to Quorn will be used.

The original Ghan up to Marree and then on to William Creek and Alice Springs was also based at Quorn. Many of the original Ghan carriages have been acquired by the Pichi Richi Railway Society and are being rebuilt. The line from Quorn to Stirling is now being repaired and by the end of 1999 we should see trains run as far as Stirling which is only 5 miles from Port Augusta. Money is presently being raised to commence on the construction of the link back into Port Augusta.

This will then mean that we will have trains running from Quorn to Port Augusta so visitors can travel to either place on their tour, then make a train trip and be picked up at the other end to continue on. The idea is to use the restored Ghan carriages on this section so you will be able to step back in history in a very real way.

For further information, costs and time tables we suggest you visit the Pichi Richi Railway Web Site.
