Quorn in the Flinders Ranges

Quorn was proclaimed on 16th of May in 1878 and being at the crossroads of Australian North, South, East and West railways it soon became a very important railway town. The famous Ghan train started here, eventually running all the way up to Alice Springs. The Volunteer run Pichi Richi Railway steam trains are based here today and have large railway workshops situated at Quorn. Conducted tours of these workshops are run by arrangement with the booking office. This tour is one that is well worth going on as they have an enormous collection of old engines and rolling stock being restored. Many movie films have been made in this area and a listing of these along with many photos from them is displayed at the Quorn Tourist Information Centre.

Aerial view shows the two distinct settlements of North and South Quorn separated by the Pinkerton Creek and parklands. The left foreground shows the Barytes treatment plant. This plant takes Barium sulphate from the mines east of Blinman and Oraparinna and washes then crushes the rock and bags it for sale. In the middle you can see the Stockyard Arena, SABH Wheat Silos and on the right centre the Oval where football and cricket are played in season. The annual show is also held here on the oval every year in September. In the distance can be seen one of our famous landmarks the Devils Peak. The Pichi Richi Pass is at the foot of this mountain. On the right can be seen part of the Dutchman's Stern where the Dutchman's Stern Conservation Park is situated.

During the war years from 1939 to 1945 troops from many parts of the world came through Quorn on their way North or South. The local CWA ladies served near 1,000,000 free meals to them as they came through Quorn.

Also used to be the picture theatre before the advent of TV killed off the need for this in small country towns.

The Courthouse is now a local History Museum. An excellent display is provided in this old stone building. Here you can spend many hours reading of Quorn's colourful past. The achievers , the knockers, fires, floods and drought are all here.
