Railway Terrace
the street of Hotels.
Steam trains run from the old Railway station opposite the hotels here on Railway
Terrace during all School and public holidays from the end of March to the end of
October each year.
Pichi
Richi Railway timetable has more details.
A view along Railway Terrace at
night.
This is where weary travellers would go for quick refresher
or a night's sleep while waiting to rejoin their journey on the East, West, North, South
connecting trains. In days gone by there was two flour mills, butter factory, two banks,
Masonic Lodge, billiard parlor, four hotels, courthouse, town hall, post office, police
station and machinery factory in addition to many private homes along this Boulevard. The
majority of these premises were built of local stone and therefore still stand in good
repair today although sometimes used for very different purposes. For example the old
flour mill is now a restaurant, gallery and motel.
Many of the old buildings and some slate footpath along Railway Terrace has
been declared National Heritage Trust. A walk brochure has been prepared for Quorn and it
lists some of the colourful history along this street. Can you imagine the hustle and
bustle that used to be the fate of this terrace many years ago? Just think over 1,000,000
troops travelled on the trains through Quorn during the Second World War and most of them
visited the pubs or stretched their legs along this boulevard while waiting for a transfer
between their special Troop Trains.
As the Post Office, Police Station, Court House, Town Hall,
Souvenir Shop, National Bank, Mill Motel and four Hotels are along this terrace it is
still a major centre of activity even though the high traffic from the railway presence
ceased some 40 years ago. This street runs the full length of South Quorn from the School
to the Catholic Church. It is also the main road to Hawker from Wilmington and Port
Augusta and today it has much passing vehicular traffic.
The War Memorial in Quorn
The War Memorial,
Thompson
Playground and park with BBQ facilities and children's playground, Masonic Lodge,
Lions Club House, Bowling Club, Tennis and Basketball courts are all along here.
Yellow Footed Rock Wallaby - Serpentine Trail Diorama
In 1993 the Serpentine Trail Project "Art Linking The Outback"
was worked on throughout the Flinders Ranges and Quorn was chosen to display the Rock
Wallaby diorama as the Gorges near here are home to many of these fine creatures. The
Yellow Footed Rock Wallaby lives only in areas of rocky outcrop. It comes down to the
creeks at late evening or early morning to drink. In size it is much smaller than a
kangaroo and much more agile. It can bound huge distances from rock to rock or even jump
quite large heights when frightened and wanting to get back up to the high territory it
inhabits. Is a very graceful animal that does not exist in large numbers, has black and
yellow stripes on its tail and like the kangaroo it carries its young in a pouch.
