Area School

The Area School caters for up to Year 12 using the Distance Learning program for some subjects. Approximately 70 children attend school here. Two school buses collect children from the farms and transfer them to school and back home each day. There is a Community library situated at the School and this has been connected to the internet for public use.

Hawker Hospital

Hawker although only a small population of less than 500 persons is blessed with having a Hospital with attached surgery and a resident doctor. It is a 14 bed Hospital, has recently been renovated and has Aged Care facilities.

A number of General stores, Shops, Garages, Deli's, Post Office, ANZ bank and Police Station along with the other facilities described elsewhere all help to make this a viable town. It is over 100Km to Port Augusta which is the nearest city and therefore the locals try hard to cater for most customers. Hildabuilt Engineering situated on Elder Terrace is becoming recognised as an industry with potential for increased Hawker employment.

State Emergency Service, Ambulance and Country Fire Service are all volunteer run emergency services based at Hawker.

The National Parks and Wildlife Service has an office in Hawker as this is their base for looking after the Flinders Ranges National Park situated just north of Hawker. This office is situated in the old Hawker Post Office building. They are also the agents for the Post Office.

Hawker has a mobile phone service. The range is limited but it does give travellers access when visiting this area. There are no more mobile phone services around Wilpena or Blinman area.

An airstrip is situated some six to seven kilometres from Hawker township. A daily air charter service on week days flies into Hawker. The airstrip is now a sealed one of 1200 meters in length and emergency lighting is being installed.
