Towns of the Flinders Ranges Council Area. There are two main towns left in the Flinders Ranges Council area - Quorn and Hawker. Quorn is near the southern end of council and has a population of about 1400. The town is slowly progressing again after a large downturn in the mid 1950's through to the 1970's when the railway line was rerouted and the railway workshops were all transferred to Port Augusta. Tourism is playing a part in the future of Quorn along with the fact that many people find Quorn to be a preferable place to live and so commute to Port Augusta each day for work. Many of the older homes in Quorn are built of sandstone quarried from the area, most of these are still being kept in excellent condition and we are now experiencing renewed interest from as far away as Adelaide for these homes to be used as bed & breakfast style accommodation. The current price of city based property is also increasing the movement of people into Quorn due to its clean air and beautiful scenery who along with our reliable internet access are now choosing to live and work from here. New homes are going up each year in and around Quorn. There are plenty of housing blocks still un-built on and the cost of these compared to our city cousins is a giveaway. This town will still continue to be one of the growth towns of the outback for a long time to come. We also have many fringe rural blocks Quorn has all that is essential in the way of daily shopping facilities and we are only 40km from Port Augusta for those times when it is found that we need some item not readily available here. Our shopping facilities range from a modern 7 day supermarket, post office, banking facilities, newsagent, garage and fuel, variety/hardware store, electrical and whitegoods store, clothing stores, takeaways, chemist and rural supplies to four hotels. Hawker is near the northern end of the Flinders Ranges Council area and has a population of around 400. Its future is tied up with tourism and much effort is put into this by the locals. Many other smaller settlements were at one time present in the area. All but Cradock with a hotel and Bruce with its bed and breakfast accommodation have now become ghost towns.
